Amazed (but not surprised) that Steve has developed his program to the point that there can be such a thing as the UH Coastal Center. How wonderful! The question is personally intriguing, but my mind also wanders to funding (occupational hazard). How did you justify the funding for such a project (e.g. societal benefit)? Or is there a funding source for exploratory research where you can pursue science for discovery and understanding?

    • In this case (the micronutrient project) it is pure research, funded by NSF. We’re just trying to figure out how the world works. But there are potential practical applications. One might be able to mange herbivore pests or control exotic species by adjusting micronutrients.

That’s great that we continue to budget Federal dollars for pure research and the grant process in place allows researchers like you to obtain it!
